The Reading Club is for rising third and fourth grade students who are reluctant and struggling readers and is designed to improve their literacy skills and help them become more confident students. The program actively engages students in fun activities while developing their reading skills. The students are identified by their teachers and principals and the program is offered to them free of charge.
The program begins with a week long day camp held at the church. It runs from 8:30 to 5:00 pm and includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The children spend the mornings in six centers: phonics, decoding, strategies, writing, comprehension and pleasure reading. The afternoons include fun team building projects, games, field trips and opportunities for lots of creativity.
During the school year, The Reading Club meets after school approximately every two weeks at the church and lasts until 5:00 p.m. We have found that reinforcing the strategies and offering continuous support helps the student’s confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
